About the Artist My
career began almost 30 years ago when
I started collecting beach stones on
the shores of Lake Champlain in Burlington,
Vermont. I incorporated these unusual
stones of all shapes and sizes into ring
designs, bracelets, and necklaces. These
odd shaped rocks of shale and quartz
provided the foundation upon which I
formulated my techniques and styles.
Though largely self-taught as an artist
and jewelry designer, I have completed
several Fine Metals and Jewelry Design
courses, as well as drawing, painting,
and basic design courses at the University
of Vermont. After much experimentation,
I have developed a passion for working
with fossils, minerals, semi-precious
gems, and freshwater pearls in most of
my jewelry designs. The color and textures
in these beauties of nature are always
an inspiration for my work. Highlighting
the special qualities of each stone or
fossil helps to produce unique and special
statements in each piece of jewelry.
By incorporating the beauty that nature constantly offers us, I feel that my pieces of jewelry have an appeal to the artist in all of us. Each piece is personally handcrafted, by me, from the stone setting to the final polish. Jewelry is a personal statement and
my wish is to be able to provide unique
and beautiful jewelry for many people
to wear and enjoy. Sharing my creations
with others - seeing their interest and
appreciation - gives me great joy and
satisfaction. See us on facebook Melissa Flanagan Designs Romancing the Stone Vergennes, Vermont (802) 236-3819
